The history of scrapbooking started around 200 years ago. The very first scrap books appeared in the early 1800s when people began to collect poems, newspaper cuttings, calling cards, letters, special pressed flowers and pretty bits of fabric.
It certainly was not about preserving photographs at that time, creative 'scrapbookers' put together their special albums for the same reasons that they do today, to express their thoughts and sentiments, preserve their memories and special events.
Modern scrap books look very different from the very early examples because, during the last two centuries, the craft has evolved considerably.
The introduction of photography and digital technology changed scrapbooking in a big way 
and nowadays there are suppliers who have developed all manner of 'scrap' specially designed to enhance the personal effects in your book of memories.
In recent times, thanks to the internet and dedicated scrap booking stores the hobby has grown enormously in popularity.
You can buy so many different bits and pieces for your scrapbook including stickers, flowers and letters which means that every single page will be unique and individual.
It also means that it is easy to mix the items you have purchased with your own photos, writing in a pretty colored ink and materials to give it a highly personal feel.
The internet offers countless ideas for scrapbook layouts, designs and even step-by-step scrapbook workshops to help give you some inspiration. Check out this scrapbooking craft here for inspiration in using meaningful items in your life for a unique scrapbooking project.
