Quilting

Quilting - Making a beautiful quilt is a truly lovely thing for a mom and a daughter to do together. For many years female members of the family have sat together, chatted and made special quilts which have become fabulous family heirlooms being passed down through generations.

The attraction was that the skilled artisans who made the quilts could add all sorts of decorative extras to their designs turning them not only in to a proper story of their lives but also in many cases a work of art.

Pioneers on the wagon trails even used their quilting to patch holes in their wagons. Death was a frequent occurrence on the trail and wood for coffins was scarce so families would use their quilts as a shroud and wrap their loved ones in a homemade quilt before burial.

Quilting, which involves stitching together layers of padding and fabric, is an ancient craft and dates back to the 12th century in Europe when Crusaders wore quilted garments.

The handicraft did not really take off in the US until the mid 19th century because prior to that time, most women were busy having to weave, spin or sew fabric for their family.

The industrial revolution meant that most textiles were being manufactured on a grand scale and women found they had more free time to take up quilting for pleasure.

A variety of styles developed during this time. Quilts with one solid piece of fabric for a top layer were referred to as whole cloth quilts. Craftswomen used the actual quilting to develop patterns.

Broderie perse quilts became very popular at this time too. It involved the applique of cut-out motifs against a solid background. This allowed quilt makers to really use their imaginations and even tell stories through their quilting.

And medallion quilting referred to a method where there was a center piece in the middle of the quilt and other fabrics were stitched around it. The center was often surrounded by two or more borders.

If you fancy giving quilting a try there are countless lovely patterns available online. Just have a browse for inspiration gather your fabrics and get sewing.
